Health Screenings/Biometric Screenings
A biometric screening is a short health examination that tests blood pressure, blood glucose, height and weight, waist circumference and a lipid profile. The lipid profile is a blood test that measures total cholesterol, LDL, HDL, Triglycerides and a cardiac-risk ratio. The results of these tests provide the employee with information regarding their health and risk factors that may affect their well-being. By detecting problems early, the patient can take measures to prevent health complications. A prime example of this is detecting high-blood pressure early. If left untreated, high blood pressure (hypertension) can lead to serious complications.
Health screenings help doctors test high-risk populations for a variety of diseases. The tests help them discover any signs of the disease. A biometric screening can lead to the identification of conditions which can lead to cancer, diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Doctors, for example, may discover a patient has high blood pressure during a regular blood pressure screening. High levels of cholesterol increase the sensitivity of the arteries to high blood pressure and increases the likelihood of them being damaged. To treat high blood pressure effectively, doctors must know what the patient’s cholesterol level is. If it is high, it is important to bring those levels down. While diet, exercise, ideal weight and regular exercise are all important in reducing cholesterol, most people with high blood pressure and normal or high cholesterol also need a cholesterol lowering drug, such as a statin.
