Do I Need a Visa for Turkey?

Yes. US citizens need a visa and a valid passport to travel to Turkey regardless of the purpose of their travel. Turkey requires that passports be valid for a minimum of two months beyond the expiration date of the travel visa. Most visas for Turkey are valid for six months, so that means your passport should be valid for eight months after the date you plan to enter Turkey. Be sure to double check that your passport has at least one blank visa page for the entry and exit stamp from Turkey. Turkish officials will deny entrance to travelers whose passports do not have any more blank pages. There is one exception to the visa requirement for travel to Turkey. Travelers who are visiting Turkey by cruise ship and will be in the country for less than 72 hours do not need a visa.

Can I Obtain My Visa for Turkey on Arrival?

Turkey used to offer visas on arrival, but the country phased this service out during 2014. As a result, all visas to Turkey must be obtained in advance of arrival via the government of Turkey’s online visa system or from the Consulate of Turkey. If you do not have a visa when you arrive in Turkey, you will be denied entrance into the country.

Turkey offers an online visa system for people traveling to the country for purposes of tourism or business. E-visas permit up to 90 days of travel in Turkey during a six month period. Please note that the online visa system was not built by a native English speaker, so it can be difficult to understand and cumbersome to use.
