Ecuador’s location at the equator makes your skin more susceptible to the harsh rays of the sun. Be sure to bring pack a high SPF/SUV sunscreen that will protect you throughout the day as you explore.
2. Make copies of important documents.
Petty crime such as pick pocketing is an issue in Ecuador. As a result, never carry your original documents with you. Instead, carry a copy of your passport, and bring extra copies in the event one gets damaged.
3. Small bills.
Although the US dollar is the official currency of Ecuador, it is best to only carry lower denominations. Anything over twenty dollars can be very difficult to change, especially if you are buying items in local markets.
If you plan on traveling into the jungle areas, it will be important to pack insect repellent and sunscreen containing DEET. This is an essential packing item given the numerous insect-borne diseases prevalent in Ecuador.
Many public toilets do not have toilet paper. Make sure you have a back-up plan by packing small packs of tissues. These can be easily carried and used in many situations.
