Polio Vaccination Information

Poliomyelitis (Polio) cases, although mostly non-existent in the Unites States, still occur in certain parts of the world. Polio is endemic in Nigeria, Pakistan, Niger, India, Afghanistan and Egypt. Transmission has been reestablished in Chad, Central African Republic, Burkina Faso, Sudan, Mali and Cote dâ Ivoire. Poliomyelitis is a highly contagious infectious disease caused by the Polio virus. Progression to maximum paralysis occurs quickly over 2-4 days and it is usually associated with muscle pain and fever. Paralytic Polio is fatal in 2-10% of cases.

Unimmunized adults should receive a primary series before traveling to countries where wild Polio virus is circulating. Those who have been previously immunized should get a one time booster. The Polio vaccine is available at all Passport Health locations.
