What is the purpose of a wellness screening?
Prevention and education is key to a healthy workforce, healthy communities, and healthy families! The Center for Disease Control (CDC) estimates that up to 40% of the leading causes of disease are preventable. Death and disability from heart disease, for example, can be greatly reduced by controlling blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes, and improving physical activity.
The focus of the wellness screening is to identify and educate employees on modifiable risk factors that can improve their health immediately and in the long term.
What is a modifiable risk factor?
Is anything that can be controlled or treated to decrease the likelihood of a person developing a certain disease. For example, wearing sun screen is a modifiable risk factor to prevent skin cancer. Quitting smoking is a modifiable risk factor for many diseases such as diabetes, heart attack, and stroke.
Just how big of a problem are these diseases?
BIG! 24 million Americans have type 2 diabetes and another 57 million have prediabetes, meaning, they could easily develop diabetes if they do not make lifestyle changes. That represents nearly 1 in 4 people in the US!
Nearly half of all Americans have a major risk factor for heart disease or stroke; uncontrolled high blood pressure, uncontrolled high LDL cholesterol, or current smoker.
1 in 3 adults in the United States are considered obese, 2 in 3 are considered overweight or obese.
86% of all US health care spending was for chronic medical conditions (2010). Passport Health Oklahoma wants to be part of the solution to identify, educate, and help employees modify their health risks before it turns into a chronic disease.
What is the cost for the wellness screening?
Most health insurance plans cover the above mentioned services 100%, without a copay or cost sharing to the employee. If your health insurance plan covers these services, Passport Health Oklahoma charges no additional fees.
Some employers choose not to use health insurance benefits and to pay for these services out-of-pocket. Passport Health Oklahoma offers competitive pricing for any of these services.
*Please know that when using insurance benefits, there may be limits on the number of times an employee can receive a certain benefit. For example, most plans allow 1 cholesterol screen per calendar year.
