Do I Need a Visa for Japan?
No, you do not need a visa for Japan if you will be staying for fewer than 90 days. But, you do need a valid passport and an onward/return ticket for ‘visa-free’ stays. You will need to have both of these items with you when you depart the United States or you may not be allowed to board your plane.
Are going to China after Japan? Your airline in Japan will deny you boarding for your flight to China if your passport does not already have a valid Chinese visa stamp. However, US citizens typically cannot obtain a visa to China during a short stay in Japan. If you plan to visit China and Japan, make sure you have your Chinese visa before you depart!

How Do I Obtain a Passport for Japan?
Your passport needs to be valid upon entry to Japan and throughout your visit. One blank page in your passport is required in order to receive your entry stamp. If you do not have any blank pages, you must renew your passport. Be aware that if you plan to visit other Asian countries on your trip, you must have at least one blank page per additional country for their entry stamps as well. Also, most Asian countries have stricter passport validity requirements than Japan does, and many require that the passport be valid for six months after your trip. If you plan to visit countries other than Japan, you may need to renew your passport sooner than you thought.
