1. Limit your alcohol consumption.
Petty crime is one of the most common crimes in Uganda. Letting your guard down as the result of drinking is the easiest way to mark yourself as a target to criminals.
2. Stay in groups.
Many crimes that happen to visitors are carried out by small groups of criminals. This is especially true in tourist areas. Avoid people you do not know and who are not part of your group. Carry your personal items close to your body and on your front.
3. Abstain from sexual relations.
Uganda has high rates of HIV and AIDS infection. Additionally, HIV/AIDS education has waned in recent years, leaving the population at risk for higher transmission and uneducated about the risks of engaging in sexual relations. Avoid putting your safety and health at risk by abstaining from sexual activities.
4. Avoid large crowds.
While Uganda is generally a calm country, there have been demonstrations that have become violent without warning. This is especially true during elections and political gatherings. Use caution whenever you find yourself near large crowds.
