Passport Health Attends World Extreme Medical Conference November 18, 2013 By Cait Hartwyk Leave a Comment From October 28 to October 31, 2013, Passport Health attended the World Extreme Medical Conference held at Harvard Medical School in Boston, MA. Passport Health joined other conference attendees such as Andes CME Expeditions, Special Operations Medicine, and Concentra in learning about and sharing best practices for disaster management and proper medical care for extreme travel. This was a very international crowd, including many hospital physicians from overseas and even the head of Disaster Medicine for Tel Aviv University. Passport Health had the privilege of attending many interesting lectures such as “Xtreme Everest” that detailed the trials and tribulations of summiting the world’s tallest mountain. What a reminder that a pre-travel health consultation is crucial before undertaking such an adventure! Additionally, “Disaster Management” was a riveting speech that detailed the proper medical procedures to implement in the case of a natural disaster. We were pleased to note that many of the processes outlined were best practices that are addressed in a pre-travel health consultation for travelers heading to risky destinations. Although primarily targeting those who engage in extreme adventures, this conference served as a good reminder that pre-travel health planning is a key part of any trip, but it is absolutely indispensable for travelers headed to remote and dangerous corners of the globe.
