MALARIA - INDIA / ANGOLA / DOMINICAN REPUBLIC

April 3, 2008

April 2008 -- India continues to have problems with malaria in the Goa region. It appears that the breed of mosquito transmitting the disease is resistant to insecticides. Angola reports that since the beginning of '08, they have had 4992 cases of malaria and 117 deaths. The Dominican Republic continues to have cases among both the local and tourist population (Punta Cana). The CDC is recommending that travelers to malaria areas of the world take prophylactic antimalarial medications. Visitors should also use mosquito repellents containing DEET on exposed skin and Permethrin on outer clothing, mosquito netting and bedding.
