Health officials confirmed 340 cases of malaria in Jamaica alone with 11 new cases in April and two new cases in Sept./Oct.. It appears that the breed of mosquito transmitting the disease is resistant to insecticides. There have been two endemic cases of malaria in the Bahamas in July, these are the first cases in decades. Angola reports that since the begining of the year, they have had 4992 cases of malaria and 117 deaths; this is an inrease of 2928 cases over the same period last year. The CDC is recommending that travelers to malaria areas of the world take prophylactic antimalaria medications. Visitors should also use mosquito repellents containing DEET on exposed skin and Permethrin on outer clothing, mosquito netting and bedding.
